What is a WCAG check?

A WCAG check is an evaluation of a website or application based on the WCAG guidelines. It accesses whether the content, structure, and functionality are accessible to people with various disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. 

Why is a WCAG check important?

A WCAG Check is crucial to ensure full participation for everyone. In the Netherlands, approximately one quarter of the population has a disability. As an organization, you aim to be accessible to everyone.

2025 Mandatory Digital Accessibility: EAA

Since 2018, government institutions have been required to meet accessibility guidelines. However, this will change in 2025 with the European Accessibility Act (EAA), which will also mandate e-commerce companies to ensure digital accessibility for services published from June 2025 onwards. This legislation does not apply retroactively. Nevertheless, aiming for digital accessibility aligns with best practices for any online environment.

Manual evaluation

During manual evaluation, the website or application is checked against the WCAG guidelines. This is a time-consuming and specialized task. 

Automatic evaluation

Various tools exist that can automatically scan for WCAG errors. These tools can provide an initial indication of accessibility issues, but they do not replace manual evaluation. 

Expert guidance

Specialized agencies can assist in conducting a WCAG Check and implementing necessary improvements. 

The guidelines are divided into four principles

Perceivable

  • Provide transcripts or subtitles for audio and video content.
  • Color contrast: ensure sufficient contrast between text and background.
  • Text size: ensure text can be enlarged to 200% without loss of information.
  • Structure: ensure content is logically structured and headers are used correctly.


Operable

  • Ensure all functions of your website or app are accessible using a keyboard.
  • Avoid time limits that are too short for people with disabilities.
  • Consider different input methods, such as voice control and touchscreen.
  • Provide a logical navigation structure.

Understandable

  • Ensure content is understandable.
  • Use simple and clear language.
  • Ensure text is readable, avoiding complex sentences or jargon.
  • Explain abbreviations and/or technical terms.
  • Ensure links are clear and descriptive.

Robust

  • The website or app should be compatible with various browsers, screen readers, and other assistive tools.
  • Follow current web standards.
  • Ensure your website is regulary updated with the latest technologies.
