Digital accessibility: Make your content accessible to everyone
Accessibility
UX design
Digital accessibility is about creating websites, apps, and online services that are usable by everyone. Did you know that over 4 million people in the Netherlands have some form of disability? This includes visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive challenges. By making your website accessible, you ensure that this group – and indeed everyone – can access your content and services.
Why is digital accessibility important?
An accessible website benefits everyone, not just people with disabilities. Think of seniors, people with temporary impairments, or children who are increasingly using the internet.
Stronger reputation: accessibility signals inclusivity and creates a positive brand perception
WCAG Guidelines: The Foundation of Accessibility
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the standard for digital accessibility. Starting in 2025, e-commerce businesses will be required to comply with the European Accessibility Act (EAA).
The guidelines are divided into four principles:
Perceivable
Ensure sufficient contrast and provide subtitles for videos.
Operable
Make all functions accessible via keyboard and alternative input methods.
Understandable
Write in clear, simple language so that your content is easy to read. Use short, straightforward sentences and avoid complex language.
Robust
Ensure your website is compatible with various browsers and assistive technologies, such as screen readers.
How to start with digital accessibility
Step 1: Start by creating support within your organization. Accessibility should be part of your vision and strategy.
Step 2: Conduct a baseline assessment of your current website to identify areas for improvement.
Step 3: Implement improvements step by step. Start with small changes, such as making your texts more accessible.
